This is because the computer viruses and spyware are using resources you need to run programs, applications and surf the internet. Ram stands for random access memory. The less free ram you have the more programs and videos have to wait for memory to be freed up to run the programs and videos. Bandwidth, which basically controls the speed of your internet, is also taken up by viruses and spyware sometimes to send information about what you're doing back to the hackers.

A home page is the first website that appears when you first click your internet browser. An internet browser is what you use to surf the internet. Examples of internet browsers include Internet Explorer signified by the little e on your computer, The Edge also a little e for Windows 10 users, Google Chrome, Firefox, and for Apple/Mac users Safari.
Home pages can change for a variety of financial reasons for the hackers. The hackers could have PPC pay per click advertising on the web page which has suddenly become your home page. The hackers could have been motivated by PPI pay per install. Pay per install involves the prechecked additional software that is installed on your computer if you don't uncheck the prechecked option. In my field of computer virus and spyware removal, we call this piggyback software and consider it unethical. Even legit companies such as Adobe offer a MacAfee virus checker as a prechecked option. When asking my in home computer clients how they got an application on their computer none of them have known.

Often this is combined with a change to your home page. The Ask.com, formally Ask Jeeves, search engine is notorious for this. Now let me be clear, Ask.com is not a computer virus, the sudden presence of Ask.com as your home page and or search engine IS a symptom of a computer virus. There are computer virus search engines such as Babylon. Caution is advised since there are also legitimate products called Babylon as well. The motivation of hackers is similar to what's already been mentioned, PPI or in the case of a search engine virus, the ability to track, record your data including user names and passwords and steal your identity.

Toolbars are the often useful "bars" on top of your internet browser that often have things such as search boxes, auction sites and bookmarks or favorites depending on your web browser. Some toolbars can track where you go on the internet. They also take up bandwidth which is one of the factors controlling the speed of your internet. The more toolbars you have the slower your load time for web pages. Some toolbars may have computer viruses and spyware built into them which you may unknowingly click and use on a regular basis.
Naturally the motivation for hackers behind this is having links on the toolbars for which the hacker gets paid when you click upon them. If a toolbar isn't something you asked for it should be removed not only for a safety precaution, but to speed up your ability to surf the internet, check email etc..

Redirects occur when you search for a topic, click the link and are redirected to a completely different link. Often this is an adult entertainment site which probably pays the most the get visitors. Hackers place this virus in your computer in order to make money off these redirects.

Popups used to be a popular way to advertise on websites. So many website owners and advertisers took it to the extreme that popup software began being written and finally popup blocking is turned on by default with every web browser (same thing as internet browser).
Hackers, through various means from piggyback software to you just visiting the wrong webpage and getting malware installed on your computer so that you even get popups on your desktop. Advertising also appears on websites that doesn't belong to the website owners. No one else sees these extra ads, but you and anyone else infected with the same computer virus. Hackers make money when you click on these advertisements. Almost all hacking is now financially motivated.

I saw ransomeware evolve from an easily removed computer virus through safemode to a complex piece of unwanted software which protected itself by disabling safemode as well as antivirus software. Ransomeware is the computer viruses you may have been infected with or heard of which locks you out of your own desktop, claiming to be the FBI or Homeland Security or some other well known government agency, stating you have copyrighted material or child adult material on your computer. The lock leaves a link open to a service called Moneypak stating you must pay a fine to get your computer unlocked. To be clear, Moneypak is a legitimate company.
This fine of course, is a scam. A computer virus removal client told me the FBI was getting lots of calls. I got calls from some people that paid the money, nothing changed of course. They still had the virus and were still locked out of their computers.
Hacking is Now Part of Organized Crime
When the FBI ransomeware computer virus first came out, according to Znet News, an organized crime ring in Russia was busted by Russian police, 90% of the ransomeware computer viruses stopped being delivered. This crime rings front was accepting credit card payments online.
My point to the above statement is this, these computer viruses, spyware and malicious software (malware) are now written by professionals. With this in mind DO NOT risk your identity or computer by having your nephew, who knows a little more about computers than you do, try to remove all of the computer viruses and spyware that end up infecting your computer once a security breach is discovered by a hacker's bot. Often, regular computer repair technicians (ITs) primary solution is to just wipe your hard drive, thus making you a victim twice since you lose all your pictures and work files and purchased software when a computer is reset to manufacturer settings.
Instead contact a computer virus removal specialist. See your specialist every four months so he/she can catch bad things coming into your computer before the small bad things become catastrophic events.
