I Replaced The Windows Operating System with Lubuntu!

Lubuntu is a Linux based operating system perfect for Microsoft Windows users with slow computers or Surface tablets. It has a menu just like Windows without the tiles along the side. Lubuntu uses fewer resources to run than Microsoft Windows, thus freeing up more resources to:

  • Run programs faster
  • Reduce load time of websites
  • Decrease buffering (the circle) on movies and videos

First I Had to Get Into The Bios

With the Surface Pro tablet turned off press the power button and reduce volume toggle switch at the same time. Some directions state volume up but that didn’t work for me.

Turned off Secure Boot and any other security feature protecting the operating system since I was replacing it.

The Surface Pro is already set up to boot (start) off of a flash drive if an operating system is present on the flash drive.

Reduce As Many Variables as Possible Assume Nothing

I had a guy call me for some advice on cloning his computer’s hard drive. It wouldn’t boot up with the cloned hard drive. At some point I told him to put the old one in to verify the computer would start with the old hard drive. He said he had already wiped it. Seems he had called another IT before me for free advice. Never assume everything is going to work.

I used a live Lubuntu flash drive, that means a flash drive with a bootable operating system. In other words I could start the computer with the flash drive (Geek to English translation). My Healthy Computer E-Kit comes built in with Lubuntu so you don’t have to know how to create the drive yourself.

I ran the Surface Pro off the Lubuntu flash drive first to make sure everything would run. It’s an option built right into the operating system when it starts the computer or Surface tablet from a flash drive. Everything worked great off the flash drive. I checked the:

  • Internet
  • Touch screen
  • Keyboard
  • Touchpad

All ran great!

Time to Install The Operating System Lubuntu to The Surface Pro

I Clicked Install Lubuntu which was a shortcut found right on the tablet’s home screen. Followed the directions. I set the power settings so it wouldn’t go to sleep during installation just in case.

After installation I restarted the tablet. Everything was lightning fast and worked great! Just to be on the safe side, I powered the tablet down completely, waited one minute and restarted. Still worked great. Called my computer client announcing a working, lightning fast Surface Pro Tablet.
